Over the past couple of years, the world has been witnessing a shift, one that brings motors and batteries to one of our beloved two-wheelers, the bicycle. With e-bikes now being big business, brands like Super73 are always looking to bring forth the next winning design. This seems to be the aim of their freshest Blackout Collection. Grab a helmet and hang on tight.
Folks, Super73 has been around since 2016, but recent years have seen a massive surge in the number of Super73 EVs flying around city streets. That said, today, we're going to be taking a closer look at their freshest lineup, the Blackout Collection, a lineup of three different machines that aim to take over the urban landscape with style and capability.

Now, to give rise to the new collection, Super73 has built upon its existing lineup. After all, creating new production lines is an expensive business, so the three EVs are based upon the Z Series, S Series, and R Series frames that Super73 already designed.

To start things off, let's dive into the most affordable option from this lineup and get a taste of what it has to offer. If you're aware of the Z-Series already, then you know that this is Super73's comfort and style option and is the least expensive of the classes they produce.

Overall, the Blackout edition Z is currently up for grabs for $3,095 (€2,900 at current exchange rates), and while that's a tad more expensive than the average Z, there are reasons for this. For example, part of what you're paying for goes to nothing more than speed! That's right; this Z is limited at 28 mph (45 kph), classifying it as nothing more than a Class 3 e-bike, and by the looks of those tires, it's even going to handle some off-road fun.

Speaking of off-road use, we can clearly see that this fresh lineup is all about taking things above and beyond. Part of the magic that the Z offers is due to a 600 W nominal motor seen on the rear hub and a 615 Wh battery pack hidden underneath the seat. Furthermore, I loved the fact that Super73 decided to throw on a pair of hydraulic Magura brakes. Essential, in my opinion.

As for a few little design cues that seem to extend to all three Blackout machines, the headlight design is one of them, and so are the fork and frame guards, handlebar, and cargo-carrying abilities granted by that rear rack. The latter differs depending on the model.

Blackout S

Up next on the list is Super73's Blackout S model. As the manufacturer tells us, this is the "all-around" version or "cross-terrain conqueror." In short, if you're looking for an EV to take you to work, carry groceries, and come the weekend, it can be loaded up in your truck and used to explore the edges of your town or city, no matter the terrain. If there's a hint of a road or path, the S is the one you want.

Overall, this version starts off priced at $3,795 (€3,600) and features the same backbone as the other S versions from Super73. Signature traits include the elongated saddle we see and a down-tube-mounted battery pack. As for the rest of the cues that make up the Blackout collection, those are clearly present.

But where's the extra cash going? Well, it's not just styling that we're paying extra for, but power and range, too. That's because each S is equipped with a 750 W nominal motor mounted to the rear hub and a 960 Wh battery. This one's rocking Magura brakes and the same 8-speed drivetrain found on the Z.

Last up in the fresh collection is none other than the Blackout R. As its name would suggest, this version is based on Super73's R class, and since this is technically the most capable of the bunch, expect to dish out a minimum of $4,295 (€4,050) on one of these. However, it would appear as though this machine is ready for anything, so let's dive a tad deeper.

Now, this version is loaded up to the brim with stronger and more expensive components, including Magura brakes again, but this time with four pistons, not just two, like the Z and S, and, best of all, a full-suspension setup, the latter of which is based around a Fox Float 3 Evol shock. In short, if you need a two-wheeling EV with which to really break the bounds of city confines, this version clearly has potential.

As for how and why this collection has been brought to life, there isn't much to go on except for a little phrase used on the manufacturer's website, "I’ll stop riding black bikes when they invent a darker color." This is a phrase uttered by the character Wednesday.

Honestly, it doesn't matter how you look at it; Super73 seems to once again be hitting the e-bike industry with EVs designed to over-achieve while making sure you look damn good riding one. Black is back.
