Following the conclusion of the 2010 season of the MedCup on the coast of Sardinia, the German manufacturer announced it has decided to sponsor the event for an additional three years. The carmaker will be borrowing its name to the cup won this year by the Emirates Team New Zealand.
“The series is becoming increasingly attractive due to some fine tuning of the regulations and innovative ideas such as live reports on the internet or a customer on board as a 13th hand,” Lothar Korn, Audi head of Marketing Communications explained the reasons behind the sponsorship agreement.
“The MedCup provides an outstanding international stage for presenting the Audi brand in a first-class environment.”
The season consisted of five regattas in Europe’s most attractive sailing regions, with the aforementioned team claiming the title at the TP52. The smaller GP42 category was won by the Madrid-Caser Seguros team. The event took place from Cascais (Portugal) via Marseille (France), Barcelona (Spain) and Cartagena (Spain) to the end in Cagliari (Italy).
Audi itself had a boat in the competition last season, the Audi A1 powered by ALL4ONE. The boat managed to finish several times on the podium and completed the season on seventh place in the TP52 class.
“The own boat marked by the Four Rings is just one element of Audi’s extensive commitment: in addition to its role of title sponsor, the automobile manufacturer based in Ingolstadt shapes the visual design of the series, provides hospitality services and equips the complete shuttle fleet with current models at each event,” the German manufacturer says.
