It seems all the talk of an Audi A9 concept making its debut at the upcoming Los Angeles Auto Show wasn't completely unfounded, as the German company has just released a teaser photo showing a huge new design study from above.
However, while we're convinced this car is a four-door coupe, we're not so sure that it's simply a preview for the rumored A9 flagship. Such a car has not yet been approved for development and it's far more likely that Audi simply wants to show a new design language that will be adopted by the next A8, due out in early 2016.
"Progressive & revolutionary: The Audi show car for the LA Auto show marked the dawn in a new design era. What's your first impression?" Audi says in its Facebook photo post.
So, what do we think? From the photo, we've been able to deduce that a concave rear screen has been installed, sort of like the one on the Citroen C6. But the really interesting part is that the concept appears to have either very small or nonexistent wheel arches. As strange as that might sound, this has been done before, on the precursor to the R8 that was used in the sci-fi film I, Robot. It was called the RSQ and used tires that were spherical instead of cylindrical, being capable of spinning in all directions.
The LA-bound concept has been designed by the company's new chief designer Marc Lichte. This is his first major project since being appointed in the position back in February. All signs point towards a new single-frame grille and headlight design making their debut at the front of this massive four-door coupe body.
