Audi Spawns Environmental Foundation

German carmaker Audi seems to be engulfed in an environmentally friendly euphoria these days, as it keeps us up to date, from time to time, with their latest eco-endeavors. After signing a waste heating contract with utility company Stadtwerke earlier this week, the manufacturer now announces the creation of the Audi Environmental Foundation.

This foundation will unify our worldwide environmental-protection measures and its future projects will make a substantial contribution to sustainable corporate operations,” Rupert Stadler, Audi chairman of the board explained the foundation's purpose. “This foundation is a key milestone in the Audi environmental program and in our integral efficiency strategy.”

The new body will have an initial endowment of 5 million euros. Financial aid will be provideed through the foundation to activities which seek "the development of environmentally compatible non-automotive technologies."

For the automotive side of the business, Audi set a goal for itself: reduce vehicle fleet CO2 emissions by around 20 percent by 2012, as well as reduce emissions from Audi corporate buildings and factories.

The waste heating contract signed this week will allow the delivery of 310,000 Mwh per year to the city stating with 2011, amounting to an overall CO2 reduction in Ingolstadt of 67,000 metric tons of CO2 (26,000 metric tons will be saved by Audi alone).

Environmental protection doesn’t occur in a vacuum. Our corporate operations can be truly sustainable only if we collectively see the big picture via pioneering projects which we will initiate through our environmental foundation,” Frank Dreves, Aidu chairman of the board of trustees added.
