Audi has just unveiled its new eKurzinfo (German for short info) smartphone up which uses the camera to bypass the need for an owner's manual with their new A3, at least to some degree.
Of course, the A3 still comes with a leather-wrapped booklet for your bedtime reading delight, but if you just want to know what a particular button does without having to browse for hours, this is an ideal solution.
With the eKurzinfo app, you just point your camera at a button on your dash or a light in your console, and the app tells you what it is.
The app is able to recognize between 300 different elements of the Audi A3 both inside and within the engine bay and provides virtual overlays of maintenance instructions.
"Experience the range of functions your Audi has to offer in a new dimension with the help of augmented reality. The Audi eKurzinfo app helps you learn and understand more about your vehicle.
This application is currently only available for the Audi A1, Audi A3 and Audi S3 (from model year 2012 onwards)," Audi says.
