Sport is already the first letter in SUV, but some models take things further in that regard. We're not talking about performance, as in the case of the Cayenne Turbo, but about the sports car looks of the Audi Q8 and Range Rover Velar.
When talking about the upcoming GLE Coupe from Mercedes, we often come back to the Audi Q8 and Range Rover Velar. The two offer a different look, evolving from what their respective brands already stand for without a fake and impractical sloped bubble top.
But which of them is better? That's what we wanted to find out from this What Car? review, which predictably focuses a lot on the interiors and screens. The ones in the Audi are better quality and quicker to respond. And the Germans must have a trademark for everything in Virtual Cockpit because nobody else dares to replicate their tech.
We want to give Range Rovers credit too, as the motorized screen is unique and the way the integrated those dials for the climate control is pretty amazing. Generally, the materials used are of high quality, though the ones in the Audi are slightly better.
Space isn't much of a problem either, at least in the front. For the second-row passengers, Audi has more legroom while the Velar is better for tall folks. Trunk capacity favors the British SUV by about 30 liters, though the Audi has a wider opening.
Powertrains are also worth discussing. While the Q8 basically only comes with tho versions of a 3.0 TDI, this Velar tester packs a 240 HP bi-turbo 2-liter diesel. This makes it about two seconds slower to accelerate, but also much cheaper to own though insurance, emissions, and taxes.
The standard air suspension from Audi makes the Q8 more planted. The Velar is more comfortable, but also much noisier at high speeds, a generally less impressive SUV. But isn't dynamism what you're expecting from the sporty cousins of the big Q7 and Range Rover?
