If you’re a Peugeot or Toyota racing fan, look away, because we’re going to show a video of the new Audi R18 e-tron quattro, a hybrid race car for this year’s endurance series. Of course, this monster is fitted with new tech, but if the Germans’ track history is anything to go by.... how does a fourth title sound?!
Although it’s called a quattro, the technology used here is far different from the road car. The hybrid part ads a regenerative braking system that collects energy from the front axle and delivers it under acceleration above 120 km/h (74 mph). To make up for the 90 kilogram system’s extra bulk, the R18 e-tron quattro comes with a new carbon-fiber composite housing for the diesel engine’s gearbox at the back.
The car was unveiled in Munich, where head of Audi Motorsport, Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich, drove it onto the stage. "Audi has always consciously selected championships and categories in racing that have a close relationship to production and therefore have technical relevance for the Audi customers,” Ullrich says.
