Even though Audi doesn’t have a proper off-road model in the lineup right now, it’s hard to ignore the rallying legacy of the Quattro. The AI:Trail quattro concept is something extremely different from the original, looking like an autonomous pod crossed with an electric SUV.
The only teaser released by Audi so far reveals at least four doors, and enormeous greenhouse, and a front end unlike anything else from the four-ringed automaker. Bound to premiere at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show, the concept is concealed by mystery and awesomeness.

“An electrically driven off-roader of the future” is how Audi describes the visionary automobile. No overhangs and all-wheel drive are a few more highlights of the AI:Trail quattro, which could utilize two electric motor or four – one for every wheel. Adding a bit of light to the teaser further reveals all-terrain tires that you wouldn’t find on an off-road pickup truck such as the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon but a high-tech lunar rover.

Speaking of which, Audi is also responsible for the lunar quattro. With the help of PTScientists of Berlin, the “Mission to the Moon” will take flight in 2020 under the leadership of Robert Böhme. If everything goes according to plan, the Audi lunar quattro will return to the landing site of the Apollo 17 mission that concluded the Apollo program back in 1972.

Turning our attention back to the AI:Trail quattro concept, is there anything here the German automaker could get adapted for series production? In a nutshell, not quite. Artificial intelligence and autonomous driving are two things, but from an aesthetic standpoint and in terms of drivability, this fellow here doesn’t hold a candle to the cars we have today.

The idea of an autonomous off-roader for civilians is another hiccup, more so because people who want to go off the beaten path prefer to drive the vehicle themselves. Rivian is one of the first automakers interested in the subject, claiming that the R1T electric pickup truck will have Level 3 semi-autonomous driving capability.
