Audi A4 Gets an Efficiency Boost

Audi is increasing the efficiency of its best-selling model, the A4, with two new versions to be introduced in Germany. Both of them benefit from new, potent technologies offered by the modular efficiency platform, lowering fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

The sedan now consumes just 4.4 liters of diesel per 100 km (53.46 mpg US) on average, with tailpipe emissions reduced to 115 grams per km (185.07 g/mile) while the A4 Avant uses 4.6 liters of fuel per 100 km (51.13 mpg US) and emits 120 grams per km (193.12 g/mile). CO2 emissions have been reduced by four and nine grams, respectively, compared to previous models.

This achievement is thanks to a re-engineered two-liter TDI engine generating 136 hp and 320 Nm (236.02 lb-ft) of torque available between 1,750 and 2,500 rpm which means Audi did not sacrifice performance in favor of efficiency. The sedan accelerates from 0 to 100 km per hour (62 mph) in 9.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 215 km/h (133.59 mph); the Avant does 0 to 100 km/h in 9.8 seconds and keeps accelerating until 208 km/h (129.25 mph).

Audi has slightly lengthened the gear ratios of the six-speed manual gearbox and optimized the rolling resistance of the 206/60 tires they fitted to these new models. The body panelling also received a few aerodynamic tweaks and the suspension was lowered to improve the drag coefficient.

To help the driver improve his fuel-efficient driving, the on-board computer signals when a gear change is needed, through a specially designed efficiency program.

The two new efficiency top models in the A4 range are offered in the Attraction trim line with prices starting at 31,600 euros ($44,682) for the sedan version and 33,250 euros ($47,015) for the A4 Avant.
