While Bethesda with Todd Howard at the helm didn't make Starfield the revolutionary RPG experience they've been promising for years, there are tons of people who adore this game, and that's awesome. Love it or hate it, Starfield will be part of the cultural gaming meta for years to come. At least until Elder Scrolls VI is going to hit the shelves, but given that 2026-2030 is still a long way away, let's focus on Starfield for the moment.
Before we head into the great unknown, we first need to understand why mechs are such a big deal in Starfield. Aside from the dopamine-inducing gameplay potential from Armored Core VI, I mean.

A long time ago, in some galaxy far, far away, there was a great event in Starfield's lore called the Colony War. It was a bloody and brutal war between two factions, the United Colonies and the Freestar Collective, that took place from 2308 to 2311.

Now, the most relevant thing is that one side relied heavily on Mechs, while the other used bio-engineered aliens known as Xenoweapons. The latter was every bit as cool as it sounds, but the battles they fought weren't.

In fact, the number of casualties and destruction from the war while using these weapons of mass destruction was so high that both Mechs and Xenoweapons were banned from being used in warfare ever again. To put it plainly, it was like the Zerg fighting the Terrans from StarCraft.

While traveling across the endless sea of loading screens (sorry, but I had to), you might come across old battlegrounds or Mech factories from the Colony War. But these sites are more like graveyards or museums.

While players who came across these vestigial areas were in awe with the environmental storytelling, Jared Kohr, a YouTube user, worked their digital magic and created a somewhat functional mech.

This being a Bethesda game, of course, mods were used. The main culprit was uploaded on December 17, and it's called Vasco Mech, which is pretty self-explanatory. Now here comes the exciting part!

Jared Kohr used ingenuity and somehow made a polymorph spell from Skyrim work in Starfield and transformed his character into an enemy mech called "Robot Model A." The controls seem kind of clunky from the video, but at least the hard part is over. The YouTuber is working on fine-tuning and making it easier to control a mech without concocting evil genius spells like polymorphing.

It's clear that from now on, it's only a matter of time until a bunch of modders will be able to recreate the created Colony War, where mechs battled aliens on distant planets. It's too bad the game doesn't have an online mode to witness such a historical event.

As a fun fact, there was a modder trying to make the game playable online called "Starfield Together," but gave up because they found the game's quality... let's say, akin to disposable waste. However, if we take a look at Bethesda's Fallout titles where the Power Armor was a major part of the experience, we might just see something of the sort in a future DLC perhaps.
