Apple now allows weather apps on CarPlay, and the category is slowly but surely gaining traction as more developers are interested in bringing their software to the in-car experience.
Weatherology is one of the biggest names already available on CarPlay, but the next big release in this space is on its way.

MyRadar, a popular weather application for iPhone, is getting ready to expand to CarPlay, with users now invited to test-drive the early builds via TestFlight. The beta program allows users to try out very intriguing features, including turn-by-turn navigation, road weather, alerts, radar, lightning data, and a customizable map.

MyRadar originally announced the support for CarPlay in the summer, but the arrival of a beta build serves as confirmation that the work on this feature has made important progress. The company needs users' help to finalize the development, as the company must be sure that everything works as expected.

Screenshots showing the application in action on CarPlay indicate that MyRadar will show the weather conditions highlighted on the map so users can see where they are expected to encounter a wet surface or rainy conditions.

The radar is another great feature, as drivers can tell in advance if they're likely to encounter heavy rain before arriving at the destination. It's unclear how the alerts will work, but if drivers receive a heads-up when heading to the destination, it's a great feature to make the journey more predictable.

The testing program is available for the first 2,000 people, so if you want to try it, head over to the TestFlight app on your iPhone and register for the program. The parent company did not reveal when it plans to launch the production version of MyRadar for CarPlay, but the dev team should take their time, as fixing all bugs before the general availability is announced is critical for the app's early adoption.

The expanding weather app category on CarPlay is good news, especially because Apple does not provide users with temperature and weather information by default. Android Auto comes with temperature and conditions icons in the taskbar, but despite having enough space for similar information, Apple has ignored these capabilities.

The addition of weather apps also provides users with more advanced functionality. The radar is probably the best feature in all these apps, though the turn-by-turn navigation (likely powered by Apple Maps) will make every journey safer for drivers.

If you want to try out MyRadar on your iPhone, you can install it free of charge from the App Store. It comes with in-app purchases, but the freeware package allows you to get a taste of what the application could end up feeling like when it hits CarPlay hopefully very soon.
