Google has just released a new Android Auto update in the beta channel, allowing testers to try out the upcoming release before the production rollout kicks off.
Android Auto 10 beta is available for download today, with Google pushing it automatically to users enrolled in the testing program.

Everyone can try it by manually downloading the APK installer on their devices. Users can initiate the update once the file lands on the local storage by tapping the installer. The step-by-step wizard provides instructions on how to complete the process, eventually asking for extra permissions if Android does not allow app installation from third-party sources.

Google did not share release notes for this update, so users must determine what's new by installing Android Auto 10. I already installed the beta on my phone, but at first glance, the latest version doesn't include any significant changes. Google probably focused on under-the-hood improvements, despite the version bump pointing to a major release.

The latest build in the stable channel is Android Auto 9.9, so the arrival of version 10 is more or less a surprise. Most users expected Google to continue the Android Auto development with build 9.10, but the jump to version 10 could indicate that the company might be starting the work on a bunch of new features.

The work is likely in the early days, and we shouldn't notice any critical changes anytime soon, considering Google has just completed the Coolwalk rollout.

The search giant announced the Coolwalk redesign in January. It allows users to run multiple apps in cards similar to the CarPlay Dashboard. Coolwalk works on most car displays regardless of screen size, resolution, and aspect ratio. The card-based interface focuses on three main activities: navigation, music listening, and phone calls. Navigation apps use the largest card, whereas Spotify and YouTube Music receive a smaller version. Phone calls appear on the screen only during active calls.

Android Auto 10 should begin rolling out to the stable channel in the coming weeks after the beta testing process is complete. The testing period doesn’t typically take more than a couple of weeks, as Google has significantly accelerated the release cadence in the last 12 months. So far, The beta program works like a charm, providing power users access to new builds before they get the go-ahead for the stable channel. In return, testers submit feedback that helps Google refine the latest builds and address the reported bugs before the public rollout, reducing the likelihood of significant glitches.

You can find Android Auto 10 builds for manual downloads on this page. Once the production release starts, the stable build will roll out through the Google Play Store, like a regular app update.
