AMP Electric Vehicles is a company which retrofits electric drivetrains to the Mercedes-Benz ML and the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Apparently, the company signed a memorandum of understanding with U-Go Stations Cayman in order to sell their converted ML in the Cayman Islands.
For EVs to be legal in the islands, the government needs to pass a law stipulating so, and according to green.autoblog.com, an AMP representative said that the law had indeed been approved and signed by the governor last November. However, according to John Felder, a local car dealer who wanted to register an electric ML at the Grand Cayman Department of Vehicle and Drivers Licensing, got his registration denied and he was told that it would be impossible to register the vehicle.

According to the local authorities, the law is indeed approved, but it has yet to receive a date when it becomes active, as other specific regulations need to be addressed and drafted. Currently, it seems that the only ‘green’ car in the Cayman Islands is a Chevy Volt which got the government’s approval last year.
