Renault's Alpine brand has announced its comeback to endurance racing after 35 years with a Le Mans 24 Hours race LMP2 prototype teaser.
With the production model set to debut in 2016, Alpine doesn't want to waste any time and plans on rebuilding its name through endurance racing, like in the good old days.
This means a 500 HP Nissan-powered LMP2 prototype will be entered in this year's Le Mans Series, and, consequently, in the eagerly awaited 2013 Le Mans 24 Hours race, with Pierre Ragues, Nelson Panciatici, and a third yet unknown driver behind the steering wheel.
"Alpine’s return to the legendary Le Mans 24 Hours in 2013 marks the beginning of a new adventure which is set to last. The passion that drives us is matched only by the humility and careful attention paid to costs that epitomize this comeback which itself has been made possible thanks to the involvement of our partners and supporters who I would like to thank formally here. Together, step by step, we will do our very best to write another exciting page in the history of Alpine, a truly outstanding name in the world of French sports cars," said Renault boss Carlos Tavares.
The Alpine LMP Prototype will be officially unveiled at Le Castellet, France, on March 24.
The only time when Alpine scored an overall victory at Le Mans happened in 1978, with the Renault A442B in the hands of Didier Pironi and Jean-Pierre Jaussaud.
