German aftermarket specialist Alpina released a new version of its diesel-powered 3-Series based D3 model, the D3 Biturbo. The car is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder bi-turbo engine developing 215 horsepower and 332 lb-ft. of torque (450 Nm) available from 2,000 rpm.

The transmission is developed by ZF and Alpina and offers three driving modes: D - full automatic, S - Sport and M - manual. The engine of the Alpina D3 Biturbo is based on BMW’s 2.0-liter, four-cylinder turbo-diesel with a block made entirely of aluminium. The high-pressure, 2,000 bar Bosch-Common Rail system ensures high efficiency by means of using Piezo injectors.

Two differently-sized exhaust-driven turbochargers are helping the D3 Biturbo achieve its power. The smaller one starts to operate instantly and delivers 400 Nm at 1,500 rpm, with peak torque of 450 Nm achieved at 2,000 rpm. The second larger turbo-charger fully operates from about 3,000 rpm to deliver the maximum power of 215 hp.

Thanks to optimal turbocharger mapping and the fuel injection system, the diesel revs up to 5,200 rpm, which is unthinkable for most of the diesel engines even nowadays. The performance figures are as striking as the complex technology used. The 0 to 62 mph sprint takes 6.9 seconds and top speed is 152mph (244 km/h) for the coupe and sedan versions. The touring is slightly slower – 7.2 seconds and 150 mph (241 km/h).

The D3 Biturbo does all that while being environmentally friendly. Average fuel consumption is 43.5 mpg (5.4 liters/100 km) and CO2 emissions are only 144 g/km. All D3s are equipped with Start-Stop function, even the manual versions.

Alpina D3 Biturbo rides on 18- inch Alpina Classic light-alloy wheels, which can be upgraded with an optional 19-inch wheel/tire combination, available in either Alpina Classic or Dynamic wheel design. The front tires are 245/40 ZR18 and the rear are 265/40 ZR18.
