Alonso Equal to Schumacher - Ferrari President

Fernando Alonso might not have won the world title at his debut with Ferrari, but the Scuderia's president Luca di Montezemolo thinks very high of the 2-time world champion. After only one season in the all-red racing suit, a campaign in which he was the only driver to bring Ferrari race wins and contend for the title, Alonso has made quite an impression on the Italian boss.

In a recent interview with Corriere dello Sport, Di Montezemolo put an equal sign between his current ace and 7-time world champion Michael Schumacher, saying that Alonso “lacks nothing” in comparison to the sport's most successful driver of all time.

Schumacher joined Ferrari in 1996 and spent the first 4 seasons at the Scuderia not winning a single title. Between 2000 and 2004, he dominated the F1 field completely to add an unprecedented 5 consecutive world titles to his tally, but di Montezemolo thinks a big part of that success was owed to a competitive car provided by Ferrari.

(Schumacher) is a great but he also had a car clearly superior to the others,” added the Ferrari president in the aforementioned interview.

His comments on Schu's success in the early 2000s was echoed by Sir Stirling Moss, the legendary British driver rated as one of the best that ever competed in F1 without becoming world champion.

I think he was lucky to get all those titles, frankly. He (Schumacher) got them because he was in the right car,” said Moss, according to the F1 Racing magazine.

Schumacher's F1 domination ended in 2005, when Fernando Alonso won his first world title at the wheel of a Renault F1 car. The Spaniard would go on to win a second consecutive crown in 2006, a year at the end of which Schu decided to retire from the sport.
