British Poll Tips Alonso for the 2011 Formula 1 Title

Sebastian Vettel may have been tipped by F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone to become multiple champion of the Formula 1 series, but a recent poll conducted by British magazine Motor Sport reveals that this will unlikely happen from as early as 2011.

Instead, the British readers have picked Fernando Alonso as their main favorite for the world crown, as this will be the Spaniard's second season with Ferrari. After a struggling first half of the season last year, the 2-time world champion surpassed a 47-point deficit from Red Bull's Mark Webber and entered the season finale as main title contender, only for a strategic mistake from his pit wall to deprive him of a third world title.

In 2011 however, based on all the management changes made by the Scuderia for the season to come – the addition of Pat Fry and former Red Bull strategist Neil Martin are certainly a boost – along with the encouraging performances of Ferrari's new F150th Italia, Alonso is viewed as main favorite for the title, holding 46 percent of the votes.

In the constructors' classification category, the Motor Sport respondents have indicated that Red Bull will succeed in defending their crown, while Mercedes GP is tipped to become the most improved team of the championship.

Furthermore, Scottish driver Paul di Resta is seen as main contender for the Rookie of the Year honors, against the likes of Sauber's Sergio Perez, Williams' Pastor Maldonado and Virgin's Jerome D'Ambrosio.

According to crash.net, there is one more day of voting on the Motor Racing poll, as readers have until tomorrow to pick their favorites on the categories asked upon by the British magazine. Final results will be announced on February 15.
