We didn't expect the next generation Volkswagen Passat, a car eagerly anticipated by European fans, would actually be scooped in China. But that's just what happened here. Chinese spy photographers have just released these images of the brand new "Magotan" sedan.
Upon seeing the images, we quickly checked with the official company website in China and found that the Magotan is indeed the Chinese market name for a long wheelbase version of the Passat B7, the European model. This means we are now looking at the next generation mid-size, way before Volkswagen's official reveal, which is likely to come in September or October.
The Chinese Passat is 10cm longer than the European model, but could perfectly match the next American model. Styling isn't too different from the current model, but the headlights are keener and the grille much wider. Round the back, we love the way they integrated large trapezoidal exhaust pipes into the bumper, just like on the Audi A8.
All Passat B8 variants, European or Chinese, will be based on a new platform, the MQB that underpins the Golf. This will allow them to reduce development costs and install the same engines and transmissions more easily. The only common point between the two is the distance between the firewall and the wheel hub, but the wheelbase, the width and overhangs will all be increased.
Inside the Chinese sedan, we can already see parts being shared. The infotainment system is pulled straight out of the Golf, and the dials appear similar. However, the steering wheel is more thinly spoked and the dash has a more upscale look to it.
So VW lovers, what do you think? Is this generic or a nice evolution?
