Audi has taken what was once a small, strange idea and turned it into a global success. The A3 has been diversified into new body shapes, is soon to be produced in China and has now also got a convertible version as well.
The sleek new compact cabriolet is longer than the model it replaces, which could prove useful when you really want to cary 4 people and their luggage. The model's length has increased from 4.24m to 4.42m, its wheelbase from 2.58 to 2.60 metres and its width from 1.77 to 1.79 meters. Luggage capacity has increased by a very useful 60 liters.
We look at it this way: the A3 Cabriolet has gone from looking like the Golf Cabriolet to looking like the old A4 Cabriolet.
The cabrio will go on sale right after the Frankfurt Motor Show with deliveries next year. From launch, three engines will be available with outputs ranging from 140 PS to 180 PS. The base model gets the latest generation 1.4 TFSI with Cylinder on Demand that produces 140 PS. There's also a 1.8 TFSI with 180 PS and a 2.0 TDI with 150 PS. Of course, smaller engines like the 1.6 TDI or the 1.2 TFSI will be launched later on, and Audi has also admitted the existence of the S3, which will be shown first as the S3 quattro Concept.
In our opinion the 1.4 TFSI is going to be your best bet, since it's got enough power, is cheaper-ish to buy and gets slightly better economy than even the smaller 1.2 TFSI.
