The European safety body Euro NCAP has released crash test results for a few cars today, the most important of which is the all-new Audi A4 sedan. As you would expect from the most talked-about Audi of the moment, the A4 got the maximum of five stars.
However, the model also received Euro NCAP's Advanced Reward for the Pre-Sense system, as well as the Secondary Collision Brake Assist, which mitigates the chances of a second impact by applying the brakes after the crash.

In the front offset crash scenario, the passenger cell remained stable. In the crash test video below, you may see how the back dummy's hand flies out the window, but this didn't constitute a safety hazard. It's actually part of the safety system all VW models have where the windows are lowered to reduce the air pressure that would otherwise damage your ears. In the side barrier test, protection of the driver dummy was good for all body areas apart from the chest, which was adequately protected. Protection of the chest of the rear passenger dummy was marginal, and that of other body areas was good.

There were no surprises in the child safety tests, as both 18-month and 3-year old dummies were safe in the A4, which scored maximum points in this section of its safety assessment. Euro NCAP is now more thorough than ever and provides a list of 10 different seats that work with this car and where they can or cannot be installed. If you plan to buy this car, do check out the full report attached below.

Finally, the A4 is fitted with an "active" bonnet that pops outwards to cushion the blow to the pedestrian's head and upper body. Every part of the front except the headlights (adequate results) offer good protection of the legs.

The A4 was also praised by the Euro NCAP engineers for its standard-fit autonomous emergency braking system that recognizes pedestrians. From 2016, the safety body will also start testing these features, but for now the A4 can't get any extra points.
