Allstate to Auction for Charity Recovered Volkswagen Bus

Remember the 1965 Volkswagen Bus which was stolen in 1974 and recovered a few months ago? Well Allstate, the insurance company which is the rightful owner of the bus, as the real owner got her money back in 1974, decided what it’s going to do with it.

The car will be auctioned and the money will be donated to Lydia Place, a nonprofit organization in Washington state serving homeless women and children impacted by domestic violence.

"Allstate has a long and proud history of supporting domestic violence survivors," said Michelle Lee, field vice president of Alistate's northwest region. "It's our hope that the tremendous public interest in this unique vehicle and its unique history will translate into a significant contribution to Lydia Place."

"Typically, if we do recover a stolen vehicle, it's in worse shape than before it was stolen and it's worth less - sometimes far less - than the amount we paid to our customer to settle their claim," noted Paul Huber, Allstate's director of claims in the company's northwest region. "The situation with this bus is so unique that we thought it required a unique approach."

Just in case you’re interested in the car or you just want to support the cause, the auction will be held with the help of Copart and will start on December 18. Until then, visit copart.com, as the auction house is taking preliminary bids before the live, virtual auction, which will begin at noon PST on Friday, December 18, 2009.
