Italian company Alfa Romeo is reportedly working on a flagship sedan that will rival the BMW 5 Series and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
According to Car, Alfa Romeo might be back on track with developing a successor to the 166 model, although Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne said just last year that a flagship saloon is out of the question for a "long, long time".
Not surprisingly, the rumor is centered on Maserati launching the new Ghibli and the possibility that its shortened Quattroporte platform could be used for a future executive Alfa Romeo sedan. The same source claims that the new Alfa will be powered by the same twin-turbocharged V6 engine good for about 300 horsepower, with a turbocharged MultiAir four-cylinder unit prepared for the range starter model.
Truth be told, we wouldn't worry about Alfa Romeo's ability to tackle BMW and Mercedes-Benz in the E-Segment, but if the Italians are able to develop a flagship saloon anytime soon.
