Aging Chevrolet Equinox Still a Hot Seller

The second-generation Chevrolet Equinox has been on the market for five years now, but Chevrolet dealers continue to see “overwhelming” demand for the aging crossover. Since 2009 (when the 2010 Equinox went on sale), sales of the crossover have continued to improve year over year, and with sales up for 2014, that trend will likely stretch to six years.
Equinox is one of the rare vehicles that has increased its sales every year since its current generation was introduced. It is a market-tested and proven product, and recommendations from enthusiastic customers form the backbone of the Equinox’s strength. We think 2014 should see the third straight year of sales above 200,000,” said Steve Majoros, marketing director for Chevrolet.

It doesn’t hurt that the Equinox was launched just as the automotive market began to recover, but these numbers are impressive nonetheless. Last month, sales of the Equinox were up almost 37 percent compared to July 2013 making it the second best-selling vehicle in the entire General Motors lineup, while year-to-date sales of 146,152 are about 1 percent making this model the third best-selling vehicle in the Chevrolet brand and the fourth overall for GM.

The Equinox is hardly the top-selling crossover in its segment, but it is one of the oldest. Rivals like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4 and Ford Escape have all been completely redesigned in recent years, and even better, most of these sales are coming from retail customers. The fleet-only Captiva Sport is about the same size as the Equinox, and it exists to give fleet agencies and rental car companies a lower-priced vehicle option that doesn’t erode the Equinox’s resale value.

About a third of all Chevrolet Equinox sales come from previous Equinox sales, and last year, 84 percent of Equinox buyers were individual (not married) likely indicating that the age demographic for this crossover skews toward younger shoppers. While the Equinox has stayed up to date in terms of styling and powertrain options, its styling has remained surprisingly fresh in a highly competitive segment despite few visual changes.

There has been no word as to when the next-gen Equinox could debut, but judging by this press release and the five-year lifespan of the first-gen Equinox, we wouldn’t be surprised to see some sort of action for Chevy in this segment very soon.
