On sale since 2009, the second-generation Chevrolet Equinox is rumored to get a replacement for the 2016 model year.
The new iteration, which will be lighter, more powerful, but also more fuel efficient that its predecessor, is scheduled to arrive in early 2015, Motor Trend reports, adding that the 2.4-liter engine will be dropped in favor of the 196 HP 2.5-liter inline-four that is already available in the 2014 Chevrolet Malibu. The crossover will get to keep its V6 mill and gain a plug-in hybrid version as well.

The redesigned Chevrolet Equinox is also expected to serve as the basis for a new GMC Terran and a new Buick crossover, probably the Anthem.

The Chevrolet Equinox crossover debuted back in 2004, with the first-generation being replaced in 2009. Refreshed for the 2014 model year, the improved Equinox will reach dealerships in late 2013.
