Apple announced the new-generation CarPlay experience at WWDC, the company's developer event, in June 2022.
The tech firm promised to share more details in 2023, claiming the first vehicle announcements would be made by the end of the year.

While Apple didn't miss the target, the highly anticipated announcements landed in the last days of 2023, with Aston Martin and Porsche confirming they would pioneer the debut of the new-generation CarPlay in 2024.

Apple remained completely tight-lipped on everything related to this updated experience, likely as it was still working with carmakers to bring CarPlay 2.0 to their models.

The 2024 launch is now set in stone, as the iPhone maker updated its website to confirm that the first models with the new-generation CarPlay will launch this year. The website has been updated from "vehicle announcements coming in late 2023" to "first models arrive in 2024," with Apple still refusing to share additional information.

We already know the names of the two carmakers that will use CarPlay 2.0, but the juicy details are still unavailable. It's unclear when and where the new CarPlay will launch, with the feature lineup remaining a big mystery.

Compared to the existing CarPlay version, the 2024 release will come with deeper vehicle integration, turning it into a direct competitor to Android Automotive. CarPlay will use all displays on the dashboard, including the instrument cluster, and can read vehicle information, such as the battery range. It'll likely offer new capabilities, such as automatic charging stop suggestions when the battery range doesn't allow the vehicle to reach a configured destination.

The debut of the new-generation CarPlay doesn't mean Apple will abandon the existing version. The two releases will live side-by-side, especially as the iPhone maker says the adoption of CarPlay keeps growing. Its stats show that 79% of new-car buyers in the United States consider CarPlay a must-have system and are willing to drop the purchase unless they get this feature.

The new-generation CarPlay won't work in cars where the current version is already available. It means CarPlay 2.0 won't be an upgrade to the existing system, so getting the new experience will come down to buying a new car. CarPlay 2.0 will be installed from the factory in new-generation cars from companies that adopted the system, including the two mentioned above.

However, the number of car manufacturers offering the new-generation CarPlay will likely increase quickly. Ford and Honda are two names that will probably join the CarPlay 2.0 club later this year, though it'll be interesting to see how fast Apple brings the new experience in non-US markets. It's unclear if Apple will wait for iOS 18 (due in the fall) to launch CarPlay 2.0 or if the first vehicles fitted with the system will go live in the first half of the year.
