After Magna, Stronach Contemplates EVs

After late last week the founder of what currently is the largest auto supplier in North America decided to exit the company, Frank Stronach, now in his 70s, is turning his attention towards the emerging EV market.

Although no longer in control of Magna, Stronach still holds some Class A shares in the company, amounting to 7.44 percent. This still gives him enough reason to envision the direction towards which Magna is heading.

“Magna’s like raising a kid,” Stronach said in an interview with just-auto.com. “It’s an adult. The adult has a certain direction. It’s not like a baby which you gotta guide, like the electric car. I got a new baby now.”

In the beginning of the year, Magna was planning to find a partner for battery production, aiming to become a lithium-ion battery manufacturer with several factories in North America.

Stronach, who will be Magna chairman until 2014, when the annual consulting fees come to an end,, wants a bit more than that.
“We just want to be one of the best in producing rolling chassis with all the electrical components,” Stronach told the source.

"I made one thing very clear: I'm going to drive home the electric car. It needs a strong hand, and I said to management, 'Look, this deal will only pass if I have absolutely the right hand to call the shots and get all the people which I think can lead this," he said at last weeks' shareholders meeting.

"If I'm going to hustle and drive the electric car, this company will make a lot of money."
