Regarding camper conversions, vans are the most popular base vehicle. Then, we have others like school buses, ambulances, and others. One option that has tons of potential yet is not that sought-after is the box truck. Today, I'm checking out a Luton van converted into a cozy and budget-friendly tiny home on wheels.
Luton vans are very similar to box trucks/vans. The main difference is that a Luton van's body extends over the cab, offering additional storage space.

So, why would you choose a box or Luton van for camper conversions? First, they're ideal for stealth camping, as most expect them to serve as cargo carriers. Moreover, they offer tons of space and are easier to convert compared to a van, as they have straight walls.

Another aspect to consider is payload capacity – box vans are designed to hold a lot of cargo, so they'll be able to handle the weight of most appliances and materials you use in a camper conversion. Lastly, they're easy to come by, meaning you'll find a bunch of used vehicles, usually for a good price.

Meet Heather and Ieuan, who transformed an Iveco Daily van into a tiny home on wheels. The vehicle boasts a longer wheelbase, measuring six meters (20 feet) in length, two meters (6.5 feet) in width, and three meters (10 feet) in height. Moreover, it's equipped with a 38-liter (10-gallon) under-mounted propane tank.

As usual, I'll start this rig's tour with the exterior. This couple painted the exterior in grey, covering the original white look, and wrapped its bottom parts in black. On the passenger side, you'll discover an RV door next to an iMass instantaneous water heater, as well as two windows.

At the rear, Hannah and Ieuan created a spacious, two-part garage with two doors. One compartment holds a folding bike, tools, a 200-liter (53-gallon) freshwater tank, climbing gear, an inflatable kayak, and other adventure equipment.

You'll notice the RV door I mentioned earlier sits quite high up, making it harder for you to enter the rig without a ladder. The couple initially planned on fitting a fold-out ladder, but they scratched that idea, making do with a classic step ladder.

Step inside, and you'll discover a cleverly arranged interior. On your left, you'll find Heather’s sizeable closet, a huge toiletries drawer, and a shoe storage spot. Dead ahead of it, the couple devised a slide-out hanging closet for Ieuan right by the pass-through door that leads into the driver's cabin.

You won't find anything interesting in the driver's cabin, as the duo left it almost as it was when they bought it. The only modification they made was replacing the original double seat with a single one to leave room in the middle to use the pass-through.

As I mentioned earlier, a Luton van differs from a box truck in that it has a cab-over area. Heather and Ieuan used it to devise a loft bedroom, which they can only get by using a ladder mounted on a wall nearby. It's a straightforward space with two reading lights, three storage cubbies on one side, and a Dometic skylight.

Next, we have the bathroom straight ahead of the entrance. It features walls with hexagonal tiles imitating marble, a shower with a rain head, hooks for drying clothes, and a homemade composting toilet mounted on a drawer slide.

Walk deeper inside this mobile home, and you’ll be in the kitchen. It boasts a deep sink, a tiny 12 V fridge, a knife rack built into the butcher block countertop, an oven/three-burner stove combo, and a huge pull-out pantry.

There are plenty of storage spots in this kitchen in the form of multiple drawers and a cabinet underneath the sink. Many converters opt for overhead cabinets, but in this couple’s case, they decided to use the extra space to build a surfboard mount.

The empty space opposite the kitchen is dedicated to Suzie, one of Heather and Ieuan's three dogs. She has a small bed and a floor storage compartment under it that houses the dog food and any other dog-related items. You'll also notice the rig's control panel, which comprises a Maxxair fan remote, an inverter switch, switches for all 12 V consumers, an on-off switch for the propane, and a controller for the iMass heater.

Finally, the rear of this interior is occupied by a living room, separated from the kitchen by two tall cubbies. It's very spacious and features a U-shaped couch, a massive swivel table, and an overhead shelf at the rear. This is where the couple's dogs spend most of their time when inside. What's more, two slide-screen windows, one on each side of the vehicle, help keep the space nice and bright.

Whenever they want to bring some guests on board, Heather and Ieuan can transform the living room into an enormous bedroom by lowering the table and rearranging the cushions.

What about power? This camper's electrical system is housed underneath part of the couch. Its highlights are three 100 Ah batteries, a 2,000 W inverter/charger, a DC-DC charger, and a charge controller connected to 300 W solar panels on the roof.

All in all, Heather and Ieuan did an amazing job with this conversion, transforming a run-of-the-mill Luton van into a fully livable tiny home on wheels. In fact, it’s not only livable but also quite comfortable and equipped with everything the duo needs to enjoy life on the road.
