When it was released, in 2012, the M550d was part of a bigger unveiling at the time. BMW decided that the performance of their diesel engines deserved the M badge on the back of the car.
So, along with 2 other new diesel Ms (the X6 M50d and the X5 M50d), this is the first time a 5 Series had both a diesel engine and a M badge on the boot. Let's see if that badge really belongs there.

The engine on the M550d xDrive is a 3-liter, in-line 6-cylinder diesel that has a power output of 381 HP. Yes, 381 HP! That is a lot, especially from a 3-liter diesel. Furthermore this beast (as is called in the BMW video) turn the torque level up to 740 Nm. More than impressive.

This is achieved due to 3 turbochargers with variable geometry mounted on the N57S engine.

Those numbers make the M550d worthy of the M badge whilst alos worthy of the diesel name. The car has gone through the M treatment and looks amazing. The performance is incredible (0 to 100 in 4.7 seconds and a limited top speed of 250 km/h) and a fuel consumption of 6.3 l/100 km with 167g of CO2 emissions per km. Amazing!
