Stay out of the water if you’re in Florida, even if it’s only rainwater. During a rainstorm last week, drivers in Pinellas Park were surprised by an 8-foot alligator.
As you can see in the video below, captured by motorist Roger Light and posted to Facebook, the gator just happened to think a bit of flooding was a good chance to cross the street. As Light was waiting for the green light in the intersection, the gator waddled in, startling him and other motorists.

However, the man admits, seeing so many people in the rain with their phones out should have prepared him for a unique sight.

“I was wondering why people were out video taping in the pouring rain and people backing up in the right turn lane that the gator was in,” Light writes in the caption of the vid. “That’s when I saw it in passenger side coming towards me lol.”

Unfortunately, Light’s video is short, though it does offer enough visual for an accurate appreciation of the gator’s considerable size. Fox 13 says that, most likely, the incident ended without further trouble.

“It was likely the same alligator that a bystander ended up pulling from the traffic lanes near the Wawa gas station,” the media outlet says. “Trappers were called to capture the hissing, twisting reptile in the thick grass along the busy road. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said the 8-foot gator was ultimately removed from the area by a contracted trapper.”

The same Commission reminds people in Florida that “serious injuries” from alligators are rare, but that doesn’t mean you should be taking any chances at the sight of one, even if you’re in your car. Call the Nuisance Alligator Hotline for all gator sightings and let professional trappers do their job. And use this video as a reminder that playing in the puddles is a big no-no in the Sunshine State.
