Ford has announced that its stop-start technology (Auto Start-Stop) will become available on 70 percent of its North American vehicle lineup by 2017. The new feature promises to increase fuel efficiency in city driving by as much as 10 percent.
The Blue Oval automaker didn’t say which models will get the stop-start technology, but the feature is already available on the 1.6-liter EcoBoost Fusion and will be introduced on the next-generation Edge as well. Expect the Focus, Fiesta, Escape, some F-Series trucks and even the new Mustang to gain the fuel-saving stop-start technology four years from now.
“Simply put, Auto Start-Stop helps customers use less fuel, which is an important component of Ford’s Blueprint for Sustainability,” said Bob Fascetti, vice president of Ford global powertrain. “By making Auto Start-Stop available on more vehicles, we are working to be part of the solution to environmental sustainability with effective, fuel-saving technologies.”
