Offered between the 1997 and 2004 model years, the fifth generation of the Corvette holds a special place in the pantheon of American sports cars for a few notable reasons. First of all, General Motors rolled out the LS1 engine, the first in a long line of LS small-block V8s.
The hydroformed frame rails represent yet another significant departure from the C4. This engineering decision led to the transmission moving back to the rear of the car in the guise of a transaxle. Finally, but not in the least, the C5 was the last generation of the Corvette with pop-up headlights.

Although revolutionary for that era, the C5 Corvette can be picked up for very few green dollar bills in this day and age. This particular example of the breed, namely chassis number 1G1YY22GX25115592, is the exception to the rule because the odometer shows just 3,707 miles (5,966 kilometers).

Currently sitting at $15,555 on Bring a Trailer, you can bet a tenner that bidding will be intense in the following days of the auction. In addition to the ultra-low mileage, the car further sweetens the deal with a clean Carfax report, a clean title in the seller’s name, and the owner's manual.

Optioned from the factory with the Z51 Performance Package, the only changes from the bone-stock specification come in the form of an aluminum shift knob and the B&B Performance exhaust muffler. Originally sold to Maroone Chevrolet for $45,515 ($66,300 adjusted for inflation), the vehicle is finished in Torch Red paint over Light Oak for the leather upholstery.

Serviced last month with an oil change, the Corvette features a leather-wrapped steering wheel that frames a 200-mph (322 kph) speedometer. Don’t, however, expect this blast from the not-so-distant past to go that fast because of the transmission’s gearing and engine’s output. For the 2002 model year, the LS1 engine cranked out 350 horsepower and 375 pound-feet (508 Nm) of torque, while top speed was quoted at 175 mph (282 kph).

The seller doesn’t mention a thing about Computer-Aided Gear Selection. Fret not, though. If you want to defeat the solenoid in the transmission that forces the driver to shift from first to fourth when driving in a leisurely fashion, the aftermarket offers plenty of solutions that don’t require splicing or soldering.
