2024 is – without a shadow of a doubt – the final year of the current-gen 4Runner. The newcomer is certainly switching to the Land Cruiser J250’s platform, a body-on-frame architecture that Toyota also uses for the Tundra, Tacoma, Sequoia, Land Cruiser 300 series, and the Lexus LX.
Speculatively rendered by the peeps at Q Cars, the all-new 4Runner has yet to be spied. As a result, this design study is a product of imagination rather than a development of a camouflaged prototype.

What is certain to happen, though? As mentioned earlier, the TNGA-F platform of the Land Cruiser 250 series (a.k.a. Prado) serves as the basis for the sixth-generation 4Runner. We’re also betting on a four-pot turbo as the standard powertrain, along with the very same 2.4-liter turbo in combination with hybrid assistance. It remains to be seen if a twin-turbocharged V6 à la the Lexus GX 550 is on the menu as well, an engine that would help the 4Runner compete against the four-door Bronco with the 2.7-liter EcoBoost.

Codenamed V35A-FTS, the force-fed sixer in question is often advertised with 3.5 liters to its name. On the other hand, actual displacement is listed as 3,445 cubic centimeters. Gifted with direct and port fuel injection (a.k.a. D-4S in the Japanese automaker’s vernacular), said lump develops 349 horsepower and 479 pound-feet (650 Nm) of torque in the 2024 Lexus GX 550 luxury sport utility vehicle.

There’s a hybrid version as well, although Toyota hasn’t used the i-FORCE MAX V6 in mid-size applications. As noted earlier, the i-FORCE MAX I4 is the most you can expect from the 4Runner.

To be revealed no earlier than summer 2024, the all-new 4Runner is rumored to get an electric version. That’s not exactly feasible, though, because the TNGA-F platform wasn’t developed with all-electric powertrains in mind. Even so, chief executive officer Koji Sato promised a whole lotta electric vehicles launching in the foreseeable future because Toyota is lagging in this regard.

Believed to be priced at circa $55,000 before options and taxes, the all-new 4Runner will further switch to a six-speed manual with active rev matching and an eight-speed automatic. There’s a case to be made for a ten-speed automatic as well, but only if the engine lineup will include a V6.

Those concerned about the 4Runner overlapping the Land Cruiser don’t have anything to worry about because the 250 series for the US market is a two-row affair. It’s also worth remembering that the Prado for the United States doesn’t feature a manual. Exclusively 2.4-liter turbo hybrid, the 250 series also sports 4WD as standard in the US. The 4Runner should remain 2WD from the outset and four-wheel drive if you really need additional off-road capability.

Specifying 4WD should get you a center locking diff and a two-speed transfer case. Auto LSD and a rear electronic locking differential should be in the offing as well, with the latter designed to split available torque 50/50 between the rear wheels.
