With the 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 250 series due to be unveiled tomorrow night in the United States, everyone and their dog is looking forward to the unveiling of the GX's lesser sibling. In the meantime, Japan's largest automaker is also putting the finishing touches on the sixth-generation 4Runner, which is due to be revealed next year.
The good folks at 4Runner6G have it on good authority that we're in for a Tacoma-inspired front end. The forum's insider also learned that exterior styling wouldn't differ too much from the current 4Runner, which is Toyota's oldest design in the United States market.

Codenamed N60, the first generation rolled out in 1983 for the 1984 model year. The second coming of the 4Runner lasted until 1995, when the N180 launched with a brand-new chassis and brand-new bodywork. The fourth generation was offered between the 2003 and 2009 model year, which brings us to the N280. The fifth generation started production back in August 2009, which is a scarcely believable 14 years ago. Be that as it may, remember that December 2023 will mark the 16th anniversary of the R35 Nissan GT-R.

Manufactured exclusively in Japan at the Tahara plant, the outgoing 4Runner continues to sell like there's no tomorrow. Deliveries totaled 50,736 units in the first half of 2023 in the United States. Not bad for such an old 4x4 with a starting price of $40,155, isn't it so?

On the other hand, Toyota knows that it has to respond to the four-door Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler. Its primary response is the Land Cruiser Prado 250 series, which will be known as the Land Cruiser in this part of the world. Those in the market for a family-oriented 4x4 with off-road chops will be presented with the all-new 4Runner, which is getting more upright C pillars.

4Runner6G's tipster also understands that production will kick off in July 2024, meaning that first deliveries will take place in late summer 2024 or early fall 2024. The insider alleges that a TRD Pro version will continue to be offered. When it comes to the oily bits, the inevitable is bound to happen in the guise of the Tacoma midsize pickup truck's 2.4-liter turbo engine.

Codenamed T24A-FTS and already confirmed for the Land Cruiser as well, this lump will be available with an eight-speed automatic. A six-speed manual wouldn't make too much sense, especially not after Toyota made the Land Cruiser J250 exclusively automatic for the US market. Up to four versions of the T24A-FTS may be in the offing, beginning with 228 ponies and 243 pound-feet (330 Nm) for the base trim.

Similar to the Tacoma, better-equipped trims are supposedly gifted with 278 horsepower and 317 pound-feet (430 Nm) in combination with said automatic. Opting for the manual decreases the ratings to 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet (420 Nm). Last but certainly not least, a hybrid 2.4-liter turbo is believed to mirror the output figures of the Tacoma. In other words, 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet (630 Nm) will be as high as the 4Runner will go for the 2025 model year.

Quick recap: a close visual connection to the Tacoma, better ingress and egress for the rear passengers, 2.4-liter turbos across the board, and more torque than the free-breathing V6 of the outgoing 4Runner. If this information turns out to be true – which is likely to be – Toyota will have a hard time making the 2025 model year 4Runner fast enough to satisfy demand.
