Having trimmed down the list to a few rides in each category a few weeks ago, the World Car of the Year jury has done more voting, cutting ties with several models. Thus, the list now comprises three finalists in each category.
Announced at the 2024 Geneva Motor Show, the World Car of the Year finalists are the BYD Seal / Atto 4, Kia EV9, and Volvo EX30, in alphabetical order. Previous contenders also included the Ford Bronco, Hyundai Kona / Kona Electric, Hyundai Santa Fe, Mazda CX-90, Subaru Crosstrek, Toyota Prius, and Volkswagen ID.7.

Mercedes dominates the World Luxury Car with two contenders, the new E-Class and the EQE SUV, joined by the BMW 5 Series / i5. Two vehicles were dropped from this category during the latest round of voting by the 100+ jurors from 29 countries, and these were the Mercedes-Benz CLE and the Lexus LM.

While the three-pointed star brand may dominate the World Luxury Car, BMW holds the upper ground in the World Performance Car, with the M2 and XM. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N joins the two Bimmers here, and the vehicles that couldn't make the podium in this category were the Porsche Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid and the Ferrari Purosangue.

Among the finalists in the World Urban Car, we find another BYD, the Dolphin this time around, alongside the Lexus LBX and the Volvo EX30, with the Abarth 500e and Suzuki Fronx being voted out. The World Electric Vehicle finalists are the BMW i5, Kia EV9, and Volvo EX30. The Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV and the Volkswagen ID.7 didn't make the podium.

The final category is the World Car Design of the Year, and here, the jurors voted out the Volvo EX30 and the Zeekr X. The battle now continues with the Ford Bronco, Ferrari Purosangue, and Toyota Prius, and the gold medal could go to either one, as the Blue Oval's SUV is one rugged-y proposal and the other two have a similar styling, although they target a completely different audience.

The World Car of the Year jurors will not rest yet, as they have to pick a winner in each of the six categories mentioned above. The countdown ends on March 27, when the victors will be announced during the 2024 New York Auto Show, part of the 19th year Awards' partnership with the automotive event held in the City that Never Sleeps.

So, which cars do you think deserved the gold medal? We may be biased, but we'd award the Kia EV9 with the World Car of the Year title. The Mercedes E-Class would be granted the World Luxury Car award, and we think the World Performance Car should go to the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N. In the World Electric Vehicle and World Urban Car awards, we'd favor the Kia EV9 and Lexus LBX, and last but not least, we'd name the Ferrari Purosangue the winner of the World Car Design of the Year.
