Based on the C-segment platform of the Corolla, the Corolla Cross rolled out for the 2022 model year with a 2.0-liter engine connected to a continuously variable transmission. 2023 saw the introduction of the hybrid, which levels up to a much better eCVT.
Coming to a dealership near you this winter, the 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid promises better styling as part of the Nightshade Edition. A trim level rather than a special edition, this fellow slots between the SE and XSE grades. Based on the SE, the Nightshade stands out in the crowd by means of 18-inch alloy wheels in gloss black and black-accented lighting.

Said theme continues with black for the badges, mirror caps, door handles, and rear spoiler. Goodies further include red stitching in combination with black and red fabric, as well as three paint choices.

Jet Black opens the list. Barcelona Red and Celestite Gray are available as well, but only in combination with a Jet Black-finished roof. The Nightshade also flaunts carpeted floormats, a frameless rearview mirror with HomeLink, a wireless charging pad for your Qi-enabled mobile device, and a roof rack.

Both the SE and XSE receive an updated wireless charger. To be manufactured in the United States at Huntsville-based Mazda Toyota Manufacturing in Alabama, the 2024 model year Corolla Cross Hybrid is a feature-packed crossover without a price tag.

Even so, don't look forward to a tremendous increase in MSRP over the 2023 model year Corolla Cross Hybrid. At press time, you can get an S for as little as $27,970 (excluding the $1,350 destination charge).

The SE on which the Nightshade is listed with a starting price of $29,290, whereas the XSE is $31,065 from the outset. All promise 45 miles per gallon in the urban jungle or 38 on the highway, meaning 42 miles per gallon combined (5.6 liters per 100 kilometers if you prefer the metric system).

All-wheel drive comes standard as well. 196 horsepower is the maximum output of the hybrid system. By comparison, the ICE-only Corolla Cross belts out 169 horsepower and 151 pound-feet (205 Nm) from its highly efficient 2.0-liter engine.

Speaking of which, Toyota Audio Multimedia with cordless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is standard across the board. This infotainment system further sweetens the deal with over-the-air updates and Bluetooth connectivity for up to two devices at a time. The optional Wi-Fi Connect subscription improves the multimedia experience with AT&T 4G connectivity for up to five mobile devices.

The ICE-only and hybrid variants also boast the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite of active safety systems. Think Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist and Lane Tracing Assist, and Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control. For extra peace of mind, Rear Seat Reminder is also standard.
