The Kona Electric is no Ioniq 5, and that's A-OK. The world needs commuting appliances that aren't extra fancy. The 2024 model-year zero-emission Kona got its efficiency tested by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Here's what you need to know.
Strictly battery-wise, the newest Kona Electric can be had in two flavors: either with a 48.6-kWh energy storage unit or with a 64.8-kWh high-voltage battery. Both share the same buffer of 0.6 kWh. The former should ensure a range of around 200 miles on a full charge, while the latter might take you 119 miles farther. That's, of course, true only when the weather is nice and the trip starts with a state of charge of 100%. Moreover, it's just Hyundai's measurements saying that.

Fret not; the Environmental Protection Agency is here to steer us clear of any optimistic manufacturer data. The technicians put on their lab coats and tested the 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric "Long Range." That's the model sporting the larger 65.4-kWh gross battery.

The testing procedure revealed an efficiency of 29 kWh per 100 miles or 3.4 miles per kWh. You should be able to go 261 miles on a full battery. However, do keep in mind that you will likely experience a lower real-life range because of how the EPA runs these tests. The high-voltage energy storage unit is charged to 100% and depleted. EV drivers rarely do that because it can harm the cells.

The 2024 Kona Electric "Long Range" enjoys a three-mile bump in range over the outgoing model. But that's to be expected, considering the usable battery grew in size only by 0.8 kWh. Unfortunately, the electricity consumption followed suit.

The 2023 Hyundai Kona sporting the 64-kWh energy storage unit was 2 kWh per 100 miles more efficient than the new one.

Still, that's not necessarily underwhelming. Incremental upgrades are welcomed when they are on par with pricing.

Don't forget that Hyundai could improve the front-wheel drive crossover SUV's efficiency via over-the-air updates. The Robocop look certainly fits this Kona generation, and it can become a success in the states where it's going to be sold.

Pricing for the US market hasn't been released yet, but the South Korean brand is accepting maple bucks for it. More specifically, the unit has a starting price of CAD 46,399 (USD 34,202) in Canada. Over the pond, in the UK, Hyundai is selling the most affordable Kona Electric at a VAT-including price of GBP 34,995 (USD 44,177). British buyers who want the best (which would be the "Ultimate" trim) will be looking at a minimum price of GBP 43,040 (USD 54,336).

Finally, the 2024 Kona with the smaller 48.4-kWh battery built on a 300V platform will have an output of 154 hp, while the larger 64.8-kWh energy storage unit built on a 400V platform guarantees a power figure of 215 hp. The torque figure is similar for both models – 188 lb-ft.
