At press time, you can configure a 2024 model year Chevrolet Colorado from as little as $29,500 before destination charge. Back in August 2014 for the 2015 model year, the most spartan of available specifications used to be $20,995. Insane, isn't it?
Not as insane as the Colorado ZR2 Bison, though. Chevrolet has recently updated its online configurator to include said package, which – at first glance – adds $11,700 to the starting price of the Colorado ZR2. However, the Golden Bowtie won't sell you the Bison package without the so-called Safety Package, which adds $445 to the grand total.

Including the $1,595 destination fee, you can't go lower than $60,540 with the Colorado ZR2 Bison. It's crazy moolah for a mid-size pickup truck with a four-pot engine, let alone in comparison to its work-oriented sibling mentioned just earlier. How crazy, though? Think M2 Coupe starting at $64,195 crazy.

Then again, it's hard to match the Colorado ZR2 Bison in this particular segment. If off-road capability interests you most, only the Jeep Gladiator with the AEV Upcountry upfit comes close. Said upfit is compatible with the Sport, Willys, Mojave, and Rubicon. American Expedition Vehicles can sweeten the deal to 37-inch rubber for the Gladiator Rubicon, 2 inches more than the Colorado ZR2 Bison.

Speaking of American Expedition Vehicles, care to guess which company developed the go-anywhere upgrades of the Bison package? That would be American Expedition Vehicles. What are you actually getting for those additional 11,700 dollars?

First and foremost, lots of skid plates made from hot-stamped boron steel. These plates are located under the engine, fuel tank, rear differential, and transfer case. Boron steel rocker protectors are included as well, along with jounce control dampers from the peeps at Multimatic, a bed-mounted vertical spare tire carrier that fits the Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT LT315/70R17, beadlock-capable wheels featuring AEV center caps, as well as all-weather floor liners.

The list continues with AEV front and rear bumpers, wheel flares, AEV logos on the front headrests, Bison exterior badging, ZR2 Bison decals, and exterior door handles painted in black. It's a lot of stuff, alright, and 12.2 inches is a lot of ground clearance. Chevy further advertises the Colorado ZR2 Bison with best-in-class underbody protection and breakover angle.

If the Colorado's front-end styling or 2.7-liter turbo aren't up your alley, fret not because you have plenty of alternatives. The AEV-equipped Jeep Gladiator is one of them, although the 3.6-liter six is a bit low on torque and not as eager as GM's four-cylinder turbo.

The Ranger Raptor also comes to mind, a dune basher with 33-inch tires, 405 horsepower, and 430 pound-feet (583 Nm) to its name. Last but certainly not least, Toyota has two alternatives in the form of the desert-running Tacoma TRD Pro and rock-crawling Tacoma Trailhunter. Those two are both hybrids, with both entering series production sometime in April 2024.
