Hyundai's refreshed i20 is preparing to arrive in UK showrooms with more standard equipment than before. Of course, pricing has also gone up rather significantly.
Back in 2020, the pre-facelift i20 launched with a starting price of £18,595 in this part of the world. The 2023 model is £20,770 from the outset. Converted at current exchange rates, that means $26,180 for the base specification. A six-speed manual transmission comes by default, whereas all three grades can be upgraded to a dual-clutch transmission for an extra £1,250 ($1,575).

Regardless of gearbox, the i20 is powered by the 1.0 T-GDI three-cylinder turbo. From 998 cubic centimeters, the pipsqueak hiding underhood is much obliged to belt out 99 horsepower at 4,500 revolutions per minute through 6,000 revolutions per minute and 130 pound-feet (172 Nm) of twist from 1,500 to 4,000 spinnies.

Somewhat curious, the stick shift is quicker to 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) by a whole second. It also enables a higher top speed, namely 117 miles per hour (188 kilometers per hour) compared to 115 miles per hour (185 kilometers per hour). Equipped with MacPherson struts up front and a coupled torsion beam axle out back, the i20 weighs as little as 1,065 kilograms (2,348 pounds). By comparison, the MX-5 with the 1.5-liter engine tips the scales at 1,107 kgs (2,441 lbs).

Advance is what Hyundai calls the most spartan trim level available to configure. 16-inch alloys open the list of goodies, followed by LED exterior lighting, an 8.0-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, cruise control, air conditioning, leather on the steering wheel and shift lever, parking sensors fore and aft, heated and electrically adjustable side mirrors, a rearview camera, and lots of driver-assist features, including LKA.

Lane Keep Assist is joined by Lane Follow Assist, E-Call, Forward Collision Alert, Intelligent Speed Limit Warning, Driver Attention Alert, High Beam Assist, and – of course – a tire pressure monitoring system. Premium is the name of the mid-range trim level, which builds on the Advance with 17-inch alloys, a center armrest, a heated steering wheel, as well as heated front seats.

Prospective customers of the Premium should also look forward to automatic wipers, climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, multi-color ambient lighting, a larger touchscreen, and a three-year complimentary subscription to Hyundai's Bluelink telematics system. Ultimate means a wireless charging pad for your mobile device, keyless entry and push-button start, cyclist detection for the Forward Collision Assist and Blind Spot Collision Warning systems, and Bose premium audio. The Premium and Ultimate kick off at £22,570 and £24,070, respectively, as in $28,450 and $30,340.

As expected from Hyundai, the facelifted i20 is covered up to five years. The supermini also boasts Hyundai Roadside Assistance, five annual health checks, and 12 years of anti-perforation warranty.
