Thomas Schafer, the chief executive officer at Volkswagen since July 2022, made it clear that Euro 7 standards may force the Wolfsburg-based automaker to discontinue the Polo in the near future. Why? According to the big kahuna, complying with Euro 7 regulations may push the starting price of small cars by at least 3,000 euros, which means $3,310 at current exchange rates.
Even so, the German automaker hasn't stopped improving and celebrating its nearly 50-year-old subcompact. Regarding the celebrating part, Volkswagen recently launched a special edition of the GTI, a limited-run hatchback that marks the Grand Touring Injection's 25th anniversary. To whom it may concern, the original rolled out in the '90s, followed by a better Volkswagen Polo GTI in '00s.
What makes the Polo GTI Edition 25 stand out from its bog-standard twin? For starters, only 2,500 will ever be produced. Of them, 350 have been confirmed to head to the United Kingdom at an eye-watering price. Rather than €35,205 in the German market, which means 38,880 freedom eagles, the UK-specific version is £31,295 or 40,240 dollars at current exchange rates.
Going on sale this coming August, the Polo GTI Edition 25 for the United Kingdom combines the winning traits of the Polo GTI with exclusive touches, including 18-inch Adelaide gloss-black alloy wheels. The black theme continues with the roof and side-mirror caps.
Given its price tag, each and every Polo GTI Edition 25 comes with premium sports seats with black-and-red leather upholstery. Stitched GTI logos, a gloss-black trim piece that also reads GTI, and sill panel inserts that read ONE OF 2500 in uppercase are standard as well.
When it comes to exterior finishes, Pure White opens the list. Other paint choices include Ascot Grey (make that Gray in American English), Smoke Grey Metallic, Kings Red Metallic, and Reef Blue Metallic. Standard items further include IQ.Light LED matrix headlights that won't dazzle oncoming drivers, red brake calipers, a honeycomb-style front grille, and chrome tailpipes.
Turning our attention back to the interior, Volkswagen sweetens the deal with inductive charging for your mobile phone, keyless everything, a rearview camera, and heated seats for the front occupants. The generous list of standard equipment is augmented by an electronic differential lock (XDS in Volkswagen vernacular), which is linked to the electronic stability control system to maximize handling and traction. The XDS function basically compensates for the understeer typical of a FWD setup during fast cornering.
Similar to the standard version, the Edition 25 takes its mojo from a 2.0-liter TSI four-cylinder lump. On full song, it produces 207 metric ponies (204 horsepower), which is more than enough to reach 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) in merely 6.5 seconds.
