The best part about building a custom camper van is that you can add whatever features or amenities to fulfill your wants and needs. And since these wants and needs can vary significantly, custom camper vans can end up very different from one another. Today, I'm checking out a couple's unique, custom-built van designed to bring the comforts of their conventional home into a mobile abode.
Meet Angie and Tommy and their tiny home on wheels, a 2022 Ram ProMaster 3500, which they named "Sweet Dreams." Before we take a closer look at the rig, let me tell you more about how it came to be.

Initially, Tommy was looking at cargo vans for a handyman business he was thinking of starting, but he got the idea to build a camper van out of one. Making a camper van by yourself is no easy feat and typically takes a while, especially if it's your first project. However, since Tommy had prior relevant building experience, it took the couple only four months to finish the project, albeit they worked about 8 to 10 hours a day, every day.

One of the many things I love about camper vans is that there's a solution for every budget, from bare-bone builds that cost a few thousand dollars to all-out adventure machines that can run north of $300,000 (€276,545).

In Angie and Tommy's case, they spent $50,000 (€46,090) on the ProMaster van, which at the time had been only slightly used, with its odometer reading 4,000 miles (6,437 km). They invested $30,000 (€27,654) into the conversion, bringing the total cost of this mobile home to $80,000 (€73,745). Tommy shared that the most expensive thing in their camper van was the electrical system, which isn't a surprise.

I'll continue with the tour, starting with the rig's exterior. The most significant exterior upgrade is a roof rack, which holds a Fiamma awning and 750 W solar panels.

Other notable features are aftermarket windows (two on the passenger side and one on the driver's side), as well as a step that makes getting inside the van easier. By the way, the three windows I just mentioned are from Artic Tern. They can be opened like hatches, preventing rain from coming in, and also have bug screens and black-out shades.

Slide open the main door, and you'll be greeted by a stunning interior. Angie and Tommy opted for a beautiful color combo, blending the wood tones of the ceiling and cabinets with blue walls, with the look completed by a laminate floor. What's more, you'll notice an open layout, meaning the driver's cabin isn't separated from the living space.

Dead ahead of the entrance, you'll discover the van's seating area, which sits a bit higher on a platform. It comprises a single-seater bench integrating a microwave and a drawer, a decently sized table, a window, and three overhead cabinets. By the way, one of the overhead cabinets houses the rig's control panel, a Cerbo GX touchscreen display, while the platform holds an Espar gasoline heater.

The driver's seat can be swiveled to face the interior so two people can sit at the table. Furthermore, you can drop the table, connect the bench with the driver's seat, and create a small sleeping spot fit for kids or pets.

One feature you don't often see in camper vans is a central vacuum system. This isn't your ordinary Dyson vacuum but rather a built-in Dirt Devil vacuum system that you can use by simply connecting a hose and a head.

In this rig, the port for the vacuum system is integrated into the platform I mentioned above. It allows Angie and Tommy to keep their mobile home clean, especially since they travel together with their long-haired dogs.

Next, we have the kitchen located on the passenger side of the van. It features a deep sink with a drinking water faucet, a single-burner induction stove, a small fridge/freezer, a beautiful faux stone backsplash, a black countertop offering a lot of space, and a sizeable flip-up countertop extension. Regarding storage, you'll find many drawers and cabinets (including two overhead ones), one of which houses a coffee maker and a toaster.

Opposite the kitchen, you'll find the bathroom. It boasts a Nautilus self-cleaning shower door, Palisade waterproof tiles imitating white marble, a shower, a clothesline, a vent, a cedar shower mat, and a Trelino urine-diverting toilet that drains liquid into an under-mounted tank.

The bathroom door really catches your eye, as it's finished in blue paint with black grooves. Moreover, next to the door, you'll find a floor-to-ceiling closet split into two parts: one for Angie and one for Tommy.

Finally, the fixed bedroom occupies the rear part of the interior. It has a short queen-size mattress, a padded headboard, two reading lights, a small roof vent, a 24 V Nomadic X2 A/C, and a swivel fan. This space is like a small home theater, as the couple installed a Nebula projector, a pull-down projector screen, and a Sonos sound system.

Like in other camper vans, the bed is positioned slightly higher up to make room for a garage underneath. This is where you'll find the rig's utility systems. On the right side, Angie and Tommy fitted the plumbing system comprising a 39-gallon (148-liter) freshwater tank and a 4-gallon (15-liter) electric water heater.

The opposite side is taken up by the 24 V power system. Since there's no propane on this camper van, the couple needed a capable system. Its highlights are three 200 Ah batteries, a 3,000 W inverter/charger, and a solar charge controller connected. According to the couple, the system is capable of supporting the A/C's load for 30 hours without solar input. Unfortunately, they didn't share how the capacity of the solar panels on the roof,

All in all, Angie and Tommy did a fantastic job with their tiny home on wheels - it's practical, aesthetically pleasing, and features one hell of an electrical system. Considering the van is quite new, and the interior is well-equipped, I'd say the $80K investment was worth it. You can follow their adventures and find out more about how they built this mobile home on their Sweet Dreams Van Life YouTube channel - I linked one of their videos below where you can see how they made the seating area.
