The Bugatti Chiron's production run may be at its end, but as Bugatti closes the Chiron chapter and moves away from strictly ICE powerplants, one last opportunity to look at Bugatti's progress, both present and, past is certainly in order. This is the Chiron Sur Mesure, and it's everything a standard Chiron Super Sport is, with a bit more historical context behind it. That special 55 "1 of 1" decal motif inside and out, plus striking black-on-yellow, two-tone paint job, serve a very special purpose, paying tribute to a timeless classic that would define Bugatti for nearly the next 100 years, the remarkable type 55
As the former road-going flag carrier for Bugatti during the early-to-mid 1930s, this sports car, derived from the Type 55 Grand Prix racer, was one of the fastest in the world in its day. With a 2.3-liter straight-8 at its disposal and the choice of a coupe body or a drop-top, the Chiron Super Sport is a fitting spiritual successor to the old Type 55. Even so, only one Chiron ever built will look quite like this one.

With the same two-tone paint pattern arrangement as the Type 55, along with the same black racing stripes down the length of the hood and roof, flanked by another black stripe on either side, the DNA between these two vehicles is plain to see. Even the basic silhouette between the Type 55 and the Chiron appears to follow the same general shape, just refined over the course of 90 years of automotive design to take a shape we modern folks could identify in 2024. For a car that ensured Bugatti's place in the hypercar scene after the departure of the mythic-status Veyron, the historical parallels between the Type 55, often seen as a foundational car for Bugatti, and the Chiron aren't hyperbolic.

"At Bugatti, our commitment to bespoke craftsmanship is epitomized by our Sur Mesure program. Our team perfectly manages to reinterpret our brand’s iconic classic cars, creatively blending the past with a contemporary approach and innovative techniques." Said Hendrik Malinowski, Managing Director for Bugatti Automobiles. "Our latest commission, inspired by the timeless elegance of Jean Bugatti’s iconic black and yellow Type 55 Super Sport, pays homage to a car that represents a milestone in the history of the brand. The '55 1 of 1’ infuses the spirit of one of Bugatti’s most pioneering models and is testament."

As Bugatti preps to introduce a new hypercar with a novel V16 engine and likely hybrid-electric powertrain, the Chiron Sur Mesure ensures the model joins the Veyron on the pages of history with historical significance and heritage very much in mind. Whoever the lucky person who gets to own it is, they're the luckiest this side of Pluto.
