America is showing renewed interest in sedans from a younger generation that's seen too many SUVs. Mercedes is arguably the most aspirational mainstream brand, and it's working on an all-new generation of the C-Class for the 2021 model year... maybe.
Despite testing for quite some time now, the W206 (codename) doesn't look close to being revealed, not even for a car that comes out next year. This prototype was spotted driving in convoy in Germany and is wearing thick layers of camouflage. To make sure we can't see the final product, they've installed provisional taillights and foam padding over the trunk.

Even so, we can see that the C-Class is becoming more sporty and elegant. Its role as a gateway to the brand has largely been taken over the be A-Class and CLA-Class, so engineers are trying to compete with the dynamism BMW offers.

We're talking specifically about the new 3 Series, which we've seen do well in many reviews. The C43 from AMG is fantastic, but a four-cylinder C-Class lacks a sporty edge. We know that's something Mercedes is looking to offer.

By making more parts of the new car from aluminum, they're going to reduce weight. And a new platform will bring a longer wheelbase plus a near 50/50 weight distribution. That said, this 2021 model will also be an independent thinker. Many of the technologies being developed for the next-gen flagships like the GLS and S-Class will trickle down to the W206.

We've heard numerous rumors about the engine range. One said the C63 will be downsized to a 2-liter for the sake of emissions. But that would be a shame. Instead, we hope Mercedes can split the range, offering a hybrid inline-6 for Europe and the V8 everyone wants in America, hopefully with some good AWD. At the same time, expect at least one PHEV model with the EQ mojo under the trunk.
