2021 BMW 4 Series Convertible Spied Relaxing Before 'Ring Tests

The 4 Series feels like the oldest model in the BMW range, which has updated everything from the flashy flagship to the base hatchback. Ahead of its debut next year, the G23 4er convertible has been spotted once more at the Nurburgring.

The testers didn't feel the need to put the top down, partly because it's so hot you could cook an egg right now, but also because track testing is a deadly-serious business. Under that black tarp, we should have a full roll cage.

Rather disappointingly, the prototype is still wearing full camouflage. So even though the convertible has been testing for longer, you can actually see more on the M440i Coupe tester that emerged today. Combining the two, we can see that styling is quite similar to the 8 Series model, which is no bad thing.

Unfortunately, BMW decided against the folding metal roof it had on the F33 generation, much like it did with the Z4 roadster. This makes the car look less streamlined with the top up, but frees up some trunk space once it's down.

Let's not forget that the 4 Series is longer with a stretched wheelbase, a serious weight reduction, and major performance upgrades. This test vehicle looks like the 430i model, though it could even the 420d which is extremely popular in Europe. At the top of the range, we should see powerful M-badged 3-liter engines.

BMW has also confirmed a comeback for the M4 convertible. With the top being fabric, it will be lighter, while the chassis will increase in stiffness. The bi-turbo engine will make up to 510 horsepower and there will be AWD, optional on some models and standard for others. However, these hot models won't be added to the range immediately.
