Days after the 2020 XT5 was revealed in China, the Cadillac brand took the veils off the U.S. version of the mid-size crossover. The mid-cycle refresh is subtle at best, but there are plenty of improvements to take into consideration.
The XT5 is the best-selling Cadillac following the discontinuation of the SRX, and more than 40 updates raise the bar for the 2020 model year. “Along with additional new crossovers and sedans, including the XT6 and CT5, the brand is redefining itself for a new generation of customers for whom luxury and technology are inextricably linked,” said Steve Carlisle, the head honcho of Cadillac.

First things first, the Y trim strategy translates to Luxury, Premium Luxury, and Sport trims. LED headlamps with IntelliBeam technology come standard, 18- through 20-inch wheels are offered, and the CUE features and 8.0-inch touchscreen display with improved graphics.

Cadillac User Experience can be bettered with satellite navigation, Wi-Fi hotspot through 4G LTE connectivity to the Internet, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto mirroring for your smartphone, and Connected Apps. 15-watt wireless charging is also available, and the USB ports now include the USB-C type.

Even the HD Rear Vision Camera and automatic parking assist with braking have been improved, and Night Vision is available as an optional extra. Rear Pedestrian Alert, HD Surround Vision, two high-definition instrument cluster display options, and NFC one-touch phone pairing are a few other highlights.

Similar to the Chinese variant, the U.S. gets a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder engine as the standard powertrain. A V6 with natural aspiration and 3.6 liters of displacement is also available, and both powerplants are connected to a nine-speed automatic transmission with Electronic Precision Shift technology.

The 2.0 is good for 237 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, similar figures to the engine in the XT4 compact crossover. The 3.6 levels up to 310 horsepower and 271 pound-feet of torque, and both engines come with camshaft phasing, direct injection, start/stop function, as well as cylinder deactivation.

Even the front struts of the Luxury and Premium Luxury have been revised. Customers who opt for the Sport are treated to dual-clutch Sport Control all-wheel drive, Active Yaw Control, and Continous Damping Control for greater ride comfort and better handling when the going gets twisty.
