Ladies and gentlemen, we are looking at the future of Volkswagen design, which will feature two boomerang shapes for each of the headlights. We see it in these first leaked photos of the 2018 CC four-door coupe, and we also witnessed it with the Golf facelift a few hours ago.

This is a very exciting month if you are a fan of Volkswagen and a non-event for everybody else. Maybe it's because VW forgot to send me my check this month, but I'm going to say that I'm not blown away by the new CC.

Jokes about biased journalism aside, it feels like the company forgot what made the CC cool in the first place. It's supposed to look like a cheap version of the Mercedes CLS-Class if you ask most current owners. But instead, this one looks like a bad representation of the Audi A7, which is never a good car to be inspired by.

We can see where they tried to make it different to the Passat. For example, it's got a huge clamshell hood that stretches out. The lower grille connects on both sides, making the CC appear wider.

Both the front and the back have shoulders over the wheels, but they are not rounded and sexy, just a bit sharp.

You can easily tell that these photos from autoblog.nl represent leaked patent images of the real production car. The mirrors are taken directly from the current Passat, and the parking sensors are also in place, which you wouldn't see on a concept.

We'll hold final judgment for when the CC is available to drive. Maybe it's got fantastic power steering and an AWD system with endless grip. Maybe it's faster than any Passat or Golf. There could be a sports version, but the R-Line trim is probably where things will stop during the official launch.

Considering the 2018 CC is styled just like the Sport Coupe GTE Concept, we also expect it to have a GTE variant. However, we can't say for sure if that will use the same 1.4 TSI engine. Remember, the 1.5 TSI is supposed to take over starting next year, plus most premium plug-in cars use bigger 2-liter blocks, which Volkswagen has a wealth of experience with.
