Last year alone, Toyota sold 361,111 units of the Camry in the United States of America. The mid-size sedan is barely anything more than an appliance, but the truth of the matter is that the Camry gets the job done. In production since 2011, Toyota will refine the breed by introducing an all-new Camry in the near future.
Previewed by the 2017 NASCAR Toyota Camry, the next generation will adopt a more aggressive front fascia design. This might be the hand of Akio Toyoda. When he took the reins of the company, Akio promised us that Toyota would launch far more exciting products than we are accustomed to.
From the looks of it, the eighth-generation Camry certainly appears to be a more exciting affair than the current model. Put side by side to the NASCAR racer, the spied prototype definitely shares one too many visual traits with its NASCAR-ready cousin. The T-shaped upper grille, Lexus-inspired lower grille, LED headlights, and brake ducts offer a glimpse into what’s in store for us.
From the profile, the roofline and character line give the 2018 Toyota Camry a more muscular stance than its predecessor. I’m not too sure about the smallish brake discs, but maybe that’s just me. As for the curvy rear end, here we have jagged taillights, a trunk lid spoiler, and four (4 !!!!) exhaust tips.
It’s hard to tell whether this is a performance-oriented Camry or a prototype equipped with whatever the engineers found in the parts bin, but then again, a TRD Performance model wouldn’t be out of place in the 2018 Camry’s lineup. That’s even more appropriate if you consider that the new Camry will be a lot lighter than the current model, partly thanks to TNGA underpinnings.
On the oily bits front, the engine lineup will include a 2.0-liter turbo, 3.5-liter naturally aspirated V6, as well as an 8-speed automatic expected to replace the aging 6-speeder tranny. Inevitably, a hybrid is in the offing as well.
