After a bit of a struggle, Toyota finally managed to come up with the TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) bound to cut development costs and simplify things in the carmaker’s current line-up, while enabling the brand to deliver better cars than ever.
As you might expect, such news come with a pretty long list of improvements, which for now are just going to be taken as they came out of Toyota’s PR department.
First of all, the new TNGA platform will use lighter and more compact parts which will serve a new generation of cars. The vehicles underpinned by the new architecture will feature front and rear-wheel drive and Toyota is pledging to offer improved handling due to a lower-sitting powertrain.
In addition, Toyota’s upcoming hybrid powertrain will also stick to the TNGA architecture, which means the new Prius could also benefit from the company’s latest technologies.
The Japanese company is also predicting a lot of improvements that will come once Toyota starts building cars on the TNGA platform. For example, fuel efficiency will be increased by 25% while the performance and power of the engine will see a 15% rise.
50% of all Toyota’s models will be wrapped around the platform by 2020, which was also designed to be between 30% and 65% stiffer than the current one.
In the cabin, Toyota opted for seat frames that can be adjusted at different heights, which makes the TNGA platform suitable for a wide array of vehicles, including superminis and MPVs. To point out that the company really means business, Toyota will launch a “front-wheel drive, medium size model” later this year, but officials are keeping other related details secret for the time being.
