It's not yet fully official, but the updated Volkswagen Saveiro has been shown in Brazil. As usual, the automaker is shy when it comes to major design changes, yet offers engineering updates that make the pickup truck more relevant.
The Saveiro was introduced as a 2010 model and got comprehensive updates in 2014. However, Volkswagen of Brazil was compelled to do a facelift by increased competition from the Renault Duster Oroch and the Fiat Toro. These changes closely mirror those of the 2016 Gol Trend and Voyager models.

At the front, we see a new headlight design, a taller grille and new character lines for the hood. The fog lights now also feature cornering lights, and new alloy wheels have been installed. The video presentation we've discovered on YouTube previews the Saveiro Cross, fitted with protective body cladding and a silver chin spoiler. However, there are also regular models without these features.

For the moment, we have no official data. However, substantial mechanical changes are not expected for what was a recently revised car.

Even though the Saveiro looks like a Golf that's been stretched into a pickup truck, it's actually based on the small Gol hatchback made and sold in Brazil. The primary engine is a 1.6-liter naturally aspirated unit with direct injection that produces 110 hp and 154 Nm (113.5 lb-ft) on regular gas or 120 hp and 156 Nm (115 lb-ft) on ethanol. A 5-speed manual gearbox sends all that to the front wheels. There are two body styles available, the Cabina Dupla, which is a double cab in English, and the regular model with only two seats.

But it's the interior that has received most of the changes. The dash looks like a copy of the Passat and Golf. Instead of the round flappy air vents, the Saveiro now has sexy square ones, and the steering wheel has been pulled from the models we just mentioned. The three pedals get aluminum covers and a new infotainment system coupled to a cradle should make pairing phones really easy.

Stay tuned for tech details and official photos!
