2017 Volkswagen Amarok Ditches 2.0 TDI for 3.0 TDI V6

About time, Volkswagen! At long last, the Wolfsburg-based manufacturer has updated the Amarok pickup truck, seven frigging years after production started. The wait has been worth it, however, as you’ll find out in the following few paragraphs.

The biggest change over the pre-facelift Amarok is that the 2.0 TDI has been scrapped altogether. Instead of four-cylinder clutter, the mid-size Amarok gains a turbocharged V6 displacing 3.0 liters, an oil-chugging lump which can be had in three output levels: 163 PS (160 HP), 204 PS (201 HP) or 224 PS (221 HP) and 550 Nm (367 lb-ft) of torque. By comparison, the Chevrolet Colorado's 2.8-liter Duramax inline-4 prides itself on 181 HP (183 PS) and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm).

In terms of transmission options, the choice is limited to either a stick shift or an 8-speed automatic built by Aisin. The OC8 transmission is a development of the 09D 6-speed auto employed by older models of the Volkswagen Touareg, Audi Q7, and Porsche Cayenne. When this tranny is matched with the range-topping 224 PS engine, the 2017 Volkswagen Amarok will return up to 7.6 liters (30.9 US mpg or 37.1 imperial mpg) and will emit a maximum of 199 grams of CO2 per kilometer.

Under the mildly overhauled sheet metal, the medium-sized Amarok comes in rear-wheel-drive and two all-wheel-drive flavors. Confusing? Tell me about it. The first system is a 4Motion with an engageable front axle, exclusively available for the manual-equipped Amarok.

The second system is a 4Motion that boasts permanent AWD and a Torsen mechanical self-locking center differential, only available for the auto-equipped Amarok. For those who want more drivability from the mid-sized Amarok, the options list contains two features you will probably want to tick: the Servotronic variable-ratio steering system and larger brakes.

Otherwise, the 2017 Volkswagen Amarok is nothing more than business as usual. Thanks to a towing capacity of 3.5 tonnes (7,716 pounds), the Amarok is a fairly more capable workhorse than the pre-facelifted model (3.0 tonnes or 6,613 pounds). The ability to accommodate a Euro-pallet by loading it sideways into the bed is another strong point of the German pickup truck. The 2017 Volkswagen Amarok will arrive at a dealership near you at the end of September. Sorry, United States of America, you've been left out again.
