Nobody outside of Skoda has seen this thing to give us that "it looks better in real life" reassurance like we got with the new MX-5 or the 7 Series. For all we know, this could be the best Skoda ever made, but it certainly doesn't look like it from the photos.
The funny thing is there is something the Octavia undoubtedly gains from the facelift: instant recognition. Because I do this for a living, I can tell almost every car from any angle at night. But it's easier using the taillights, which are the most distinctive signature.

The W212 E-Class was always easy to make out from the front too because it was the only new car with double headlights made outside of China. But now, the Octavia has that somewhat dubious merit.

A 2017 Octavia section has been added to many official Skoda websites. And with that, a handful of new images have also been released. The odd thing is that it looks a little different, with the inner parts of the lights attached to the grille having altered details.

Something I myself find strange is the fog lamps. Do they really need to have them low in the bumper when the Octavia has four headlights? I mean, every Merc uses that space for air intakes that exude sportiness, so they should have done that here as well.

A VW Group company will almost never add a feature that could hurt sales. So this odd facelift is likely to work out. But does that mean this look is here to stay, and 4th generation of the Octavia will carry it on? It might be the case, as the sedan segment is sink or swim right now in Europe.

The Czechs have the game figured out, combining the MQB platform with their affordable blend. And the facelift pretty much sells itself thanks to the added equipment, including the larger infotainment screen, the customizable key with memory settings and folding tables for the rear passengers.
